The MidCentury Modern Show: Episode 1: Realtor Lori Foulke

Talk about an amazing place for a podcast interview. I got to sit in the light-filled dining room part of Foxpoint, Wisc. Realtor Lori Foulke's 1953 one-level home that she shares with her husband Bill Wood.

The couple bought the house, designed by University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana alum, architect Howard E. Schroeder. The couple took a 'Reduce, Reuse and Repair' approach to restoring the house to its original appearance.

What was most helpful was a set of blueprints on the walls on the inside of a front closet. Become a 24/7 member for an exclusive look at blueprints (available soon) to see the details (built-ins and more) on this amazing house. Find the podcast episode on iTunes here. (Released 1/18/19)

Typewriter Daily: Keeping Portland Weird, Carriage Return and Tom Hanks, Trailblazer

 Courtesy: Typosphere

Typing on a typewriter. It's a great hobby. One that everyone should have for mental health reasons. Mad at the boyfriend or the boss? Punching typewriter keys and writing angry copy feels so good. Feeling sad? Same thing. Putting all down on paper via a typewriter can feel so good, which brings me to this latest round-up of all things typewriter:

  • Apparently, it's not just Austin that wants to "keep weird." Portland, Oregon wants in on the action. Check out this public typing station. Just perfect for some typewriter texting!
  • Cleaning typeslugs on a vintage Yost. Not your typical typewriter. Check it out here
  • In Northern Cali? Check out the Carriage Return: The Art of Typography. (Yes, of course actor/collector Tom Hanks will be there, why do you ask?). A type-in is planned. How fun!
  • Oh, remember that time when typewriters were BIG? Maybe not. See actress Ruby Keeler dancing on the keys with her handsome dance partner...

MidCentury Modern Weekly: Ebony's 1970s test kitchen, 5 MCM homes on the market in Arizona

Courtesy: New York Times, Lee Bey Photography

Modernism and MidCentury Modern isn't just about houses or even real estate. It's a lifestyle - it touches on just about everything - fashion, design, graphic design, photography and a whole lot more.

  •  The building that housed Ebony is being converted into apartments, but at least the test kitchen has been saved by Landmarks Preservation of Illinois. It can be yours for $1. That's right, one buck
  • What's most clickable? Apparently a photogenic 1953 Highland Park, Ill. house on realtor.com.
  • Holy smokes! Five MidCentury Modern homes will be on the market during the upcoming Modernism week in Arizona. I'm guessing more than a few will be under contract before the big event.
  • A rare opportunity to see inside the famous Wave House in Palm Desert - nickname comes from the roller-coaster shaped roof that was hidden for many years. Check out that unique roof here
  • 1960s era photographer Garry...

MidCentury Modern Weekly: North Carolina 1960s beauty, Richard Neutra, Chicago Area Estate Sale

Courtesy: Inside Weather

  • This 1960s North Carolina residence is such a steal.
  • Interesting article on whether MidCentury Modern knock-offs on the market now infringe copyrights.
  • Great Estate sale with lot of MidCentury Modern furnishings this weekend in Glenview, Ill. No typewriters from what I can tell.
  • Great photo of Richard Neutra house for sale.
  • 1959 Houston home is being advertised as a 'rare opportunity to restore.' It was once part of a local Parade of Homes. Check out that unique slatted screen front.

That's it have a great MCM week, friends.

Typewriter Daily: Ted Bundy, Typewriter Repairman, Sexy Legs and Typewriters

Just a round-up of typewriter-related links you might enjoy:

  • One of the great things about finding old typewriters are the old dealer labels on them. The old phone numbers are especially cool. What's even neater is to find those dealers who are still in business - decades later! Indeed, Robert E. De Barth (telephone: UL 5-6562) is still repairing typewriters! The guy is in his 90s, working away. My guess is that fixing old typewriters keeps him going.
  • Typewriter Porn: Sexy Legs and Typewriters by Paul Roberts on Amazon. I want this book. Heck, I want to pose for a leggy pic with a guy and a typewriter. Is this wrong? It'll be family-friendly, I promise.
  • I know nothing about replacing drawbands on typewriters, but here are instructions on replacing one on a Remington. Enjoy!
  • Need some typewriter eyecandy (minus the sexy legs) while you type? Here's a visual compendium
  • The Netflix documentary on serial killer Ted Bundy is causing waves. Did...

Typewriter Daily: A Database, Tom Hanks, Smith Corona and Milwaukee's Connection

 Courtesy: David Sterling/Facebook

Friends, if you've decided you need a typewriter and the prices on Facebook Marketplace are freaking you out, don't despair. Try looking for the typewriter of your dreams the old-fashioned way - garage sales, estate sales, antique shops, thrift shops. They're everywhere once you start looking. Or put the word out that you're in the market. I've been offered old typewriters for free twice in recent weeks. Twice. Free! So it does it happen. While you're on the hunt, here are some links you'll want to bookmark:

  • So you've found a typewriter in the attic, basement or garage. Or your friend knows you like typewriters and one morning, you find a vintage portable on your doorstep, typed note included. How do find out the history of that typewriter? How much it's worth? Try the Typewriter Database.
  • All you ever wanted to know about the Smith Corona Coronamatic 2200 (electric).
  •  Live near Denton, TX? Here's an...
